Body Under Construction

Building and Maintaining Optimal Health

Picture
  The body is a living organism that has a central hard drive (the brain) controlling every movement, decision, and regulatory process. These processes work together to keep the body in a state of health or homeostasis.

  The body wants to maintain a level of homeostasis. So when there is something that interferes with this level (stress) the central control system gives off a signal. These signals can be in the form of pain, fever, or swelling. It is your body trying to fix the problem and get
back to a homeostatic level.

  So health is when your body is in a state of complete homeostasis, when there are no stressors on the body and it does not need to fight off injury or infection.  Unfortunately in the world we live in, this is not the case; our bodies are constantly bombarded by stressors. The air we breathe, bacteria we pick up, our sedentary jobs and food we eat all affect how our bodies work and that it is constantly battling to keep us healthy.
With the right requirements our bodies can fight off infection, heal faster, and be stronger to help maintain homeostasis and optimize health.

Our Bodies Require 4 Fundamental Components;

Posture
Posture is the most important thing to living a healthy lifestyle. Bad posture caused by weak and tight muscles, lack of movement, and change in spinal curvature can cause chronic pain. Forward head posture can cause headaches, neck pain and numbness into the hands. Tightness in the low back decrease flexibility and can cause leg pain like varicose veins. Having good posture can increase the function of all your organs, muscles, and increase the quality of your life.

Hydration
Every cell in our bodies require water. It helps transport the nutrients we eat to our cells so they can produce energy, needed by our bodies to move and function. So what is the required amount of water we should be drinking? Using this simple equation, you can calculate how much water you should be drinking.
Body mass (Kg) X 0.036L= H2O L

Movement
Our bodies are designed to move and exercise; it is the key to health. It has been shown to decease the rate of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and other systemic diseases. Dr. Sarah encourages all of her patients to start a movement program. She makes it simple and works with your schedule, starting off slow and allows you to reach your goal.

Nutrients
Feeding your body is as important as moving your body. Vitamins and minerals are all used in your body for different physiological processes. Nutrients gives your body the elements required to process food, breath, release hormones and brain function. Dr. Sarah goes over your diet and makes simple suggestions to improve your diet making easy attainable goals.

Sleep
Rest is vital for function! Having non interrupted sleep for at least six to eight hours a day is crucial for staying healthy. Many physiological process such as digestion and hormone release takes place at night. Having a regular sleep schedule makes getting to sleep and staying asleep a lot easier
